Well, do you go to the Carnet route or not? The passport for your vehicle.
For most of the countries in Africa, South Africans do not need to obtain a Carnet de Passage or the expense. The Carnet de passage does speed up time at border posts though. The biggest hassle and reason for a Carne is the 200% required by the AA because of Egypt’s demand for proof that the bike or car will leave the country.
TIP: 1)Obviously using a big expensive bike will result in a 200% of that value being hold as a deposit by the AA. So use a cheaper second-hand bike and get it valued for less at a dealer who will be willing to issue a lower book value.
2)You can arrange a Bank guarantee for the AA in which case you do not have to leave the money with the AA.
3)Make damn sure you get an exit stamp on the Carne when leaving Egypt from the next country. You would need to have the last page stamp so that the AA can see and prove to the Egyptians that your bike or car has left Egypt. Egypt WILL put in a claim for the bike or car as a normal operation to try and get the money.
Only the vehicle registration papers are required and a letter from the bank or registered owner to enter other African countries.
- The Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) is the international customs document, which covers the temporary admission of motor vehicles. The CPD is still required today, in numerous countries around the world, for the temporary admission of private automobiles, commercial vehicles or other categories of motor vehicles.
- It facilitates the temporary importation of motor vehicles by providing security for the payment of any customs duties and import taxes chargeable, should the vehicle not be re-exported.
- The Automobile Association is the only institution in South Africa that is able to issue carnets.
- Carnets issued for vehicles entering or leaving South Africa on a temporary basis, are normally valid for 1 year.
- If the carnet holder wishes to keep the vehicle in SA or outside for a further year, permission must be granted by the South African Revenue Service. This is arranged for you by the AA of SA (Head Office). The process is known as substitution.
Requirements and Pricing from AA South Africa.
It is compulsory for any South African vehicle, caravan or trailer to have a ZA sign displayed when it crosses any of the borders. The ZA sign must be placed on the rear of each vehicle. Is this in fact necessary for bikes?
