Ethiopia, of saints and scoundrels part1 01/04/2011

michnus

13th July 2011

The road up to Addis is in the process of a rebuilt by Chinese contractors and in very bad shape. We made it to Lake Langano and pulled into an Eco lodge that was recommend to us by other bikers. As I was tracking the spirits of Ewan and Charley since Malawi, it was rumored they also stayed over at this lodge on their Longway down expedition.

We definitely felt a very strong presence of their spirits, my neck hair stood up, it might have been because it is such an expensive place and not your average travelers hang out. This time we had no feeling of our skills levels increasing, only the size of the wallet reduced. In any case, their spirits did nothing for our riding ability.

It’s dry in Ethiopia and all the roads turn to a fine dust powder. Dusty reddish face and dry mouth with a sticky tongue for the one riding at the back.

With the spirit and all we rode into Addis at Wim’s Holland house. The old Dutch man with the lovely young Ethiopian wife and only place to stay when in Addis. Martijn and Wibien brought their VW over and Andrew and Tina with their two daughters came to stay there.

We receive the blessing from St George in Addis and we all just knew Ethiopia was going to be blast!!

Did you also find that the avocados in that part of Africa tasted very different to what we know in SA. I’ve had avo’s in Tanzania which had a distinctly citrus taste. Very odd amd extremely tasty. Can understand why they can make a ‘juice’.

Hey it is great to have you on the road again.
I envy you but know I could never cope with the Africans the way you do.

These avo’s also had a citrus taste to them, and not as much fiber, more of a smooth texture to them.

    Nice read Michnus,

The attractive features of the Ethiopian woman are a definite throwback to the Italians and before them the Egyptians.

When are you guys going back to complete the trip?

    Waiting in anticipation for more!

    Hi ,
Its seems that yoh having fun !!
If you kindly give us from your experience.

My wife and me are planing overland trip to Africa with our 4X4 vehicle, Arriving to Ethiopia . Planning to stay in Ethiopia for 10-15 days. and than pass to Sudan, travel there for 10 days and return to Ethiopia.

we would like to assist your knowledge about travel with our car in Ethiopia . Do you know if it’s possible to travel with European car in Ethiopia? Can we drive alone? Does it safe traveling with car? How is the roads quality? Do you have some information about the process we need to do in order to pass the board to Sudan? Are there any required papers or documents that I need to bring with me?

Many thanks in advance, Waiting for your replay.
