Tubliss – Getting rid of motorcycle inner tubes.

michnus

10th December 2014

Excellent solution to convert motorcycle tube tyres to tubeless the safe way.

There’s much to be said for motorcycle safety. The Tubliss system one big advantage is the safety it offers when experiencing a front tyre blowout at speed. The other benefit is that it can be plugged like a normal tubeless tyre and get going fast.

Another puncture, quick fix with Tubless
In total Ethiopia would stop us 8 times due to punctures. Tubless worked well until the tyre failed us

We got rid off heavy-duty tubes early on in our trip. They are bulky and a pain in the ass to patch and replace. It is possible to pack 4 or 5 normal thickness tubes in the same space as one heavy-duty tube, and it is much easier and faster to replace a normal tube than a heavy-duty tube. The cost of the normal tubes are considerably less than heavy duty tubes. Obviously if going into thorns and bushes the heavy-duty tube would hold up a bit better, but for normal dirt roads and travel a normal tube is sufficient.

It is much easier to just replace the tube on the road and then patch it the evening. We carried 2 rear tubes and 2 front tubes only.

Okay, we do live in the 2000’s and still have to use tube tyres which belongs in the last decade.  Being able to plug a tyre as with tubeless rims makes life a lot easier when on the road. We took a chance with the Tubliss system and to date has served us well.

They are pricey but the benefits outweigh the cost, and they do not fit all the rim sizes. The small inner tubes pack really compact and the benefit of plugging a tyre like a normal tyre great.

Tubliss – Converting tube tyres into tubeless tyres. To date we had 8 front tyre blow outs and not one was an issue. Pull off the road, plug with tubeless repair kit and carry on. Nothing of the front weave tank slapper style going as with tube tyres.

“TUbliss® is a full circumference pneumatic rim lock which secures the entire tire bead to the rim, completely eliminating the use of a conventional tube!

Sure, we know what you’re thinking. You’re looking at the photo and saying “I get it! I put that in my tyre and the tube over it.” Wrong. It’s a whole new way to ride. The age of the tube is over.

TUbliss® completely replaces the conventional tube while delivering several key performance features that’s scoring points and lap times with racers and riders everywhere. Virtually flat proof, Runs cooler, Quicker acceleration, No pinched tubes, Reduces unsprung weight, Secures tire bead.”

Hey Michnus, just wondering. I see the tubliss bladder uses 100psi. I know it’s “never” supposed to puncture the bladder but if it does need inflation for some reason, do SA garages have 6.9 bar available?

Nope unfortunately not. You need to carry a small high pressure race hand bicycle pump. We use one with high pressure setting and a normal setting. It’s small and also a back up if the electric pump fail.

    Hi guys.

What is the speed rating of these Tubes? Can I fit it to my F800GS and still do high speeds through the Karoo on the N1 the day I have to?

Hi Pepe, I am not sure about the speed rating. But I can tell you in Ethiopia we had if I remember correctly 9 front tyre blow outs between Elsebie and myself and every time it was as easy as just cruising to a stop. The Tubliss secures the bead of the tyre to the rim and thus the normal way a tube type tyre that climbs off the rim does not happen with the Tubliss fitted.
In fact I think if you want a safe way to make you will not have issues with a front tyre blow out at speed is to use a Tubliss. 🙂

Are you still of the same opinion regarding Tubliss in 2022?

Dan, it is a bit of a love-hate thing with Tubliss. Yes they work, but we need to carry more stuff, meaning spare inner tubes, the plugs to plug as if tubeless, they have more work to be done to fit them properly and balancing is an issue with the 70gram rim lock.
So for now, we just go old school standard tubes 😀
